Become a SMCALS Volunteer!
The officers and members of the St. Mary's County Advanced Life Support Unit would like to thank you for your interest in joining our organization. Please review our types of membership to decide which one suits you best.
Please Note: At this time we are not accepting NON-ALS membership applications. We will review this policy in the summer of 2023.
ALS Provider
- ALS providers shall hold a current Maryland license or National Registry certification. National Registry ALS providers must obtain a Maryland license within 6 months.
- Must volunteer a minimum of two (2) duty shifts per month.
BLS Provider
- EMT- Bs must be and remain an active member in good standing with a St. Mary's County rescue squad or fire department or the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center Fire Department for no less than one year prior to application. EMT-Bs must be certified as a St. Mary's County IV Technician or a student enrolled in a National Registry accredited paramedic program.
- Must volunteer a minimum of two (2) duty shifts per month.
Associate Member (ALS)
- Must be a member of a St. Mary's County rescue squad.
- Must maintain a current Maryland Paramedic License.
- Must complete an internship process as outlined by SMCALS.
- Must maintain active membership status at his/her BLS Company, and run a minimum of 36 hours each month as a turned over Paramedic In Charge.
Associate Member (Driver Only)
- Must be a member of a St. Mary's County rescue squad or fire department as a driver for a minimum of two (2) years.
- Must be at least 25 years of age.
- Must maintain a current CPR certification.
- Must volunteer a minimum of two (2) duty shifts per month to maintain active membership status.
Student Member
- Must be an EMT who is enrolled in a National Registry (NR) approved ALS Education Program for NR Paramedic that has a current clinical agreement with the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit.
- Student Members shall be allowed to participate in clinical field rotations with the St. Mary’s County ALS Unit and must abide by its bylaws and standard operating procedures.
- Term of the membership shall be limited to the duration of the clinical rotation in which the person is participating. Such a date shall be agreed upon by the SMCALS ALS Liaison Officer and the sponsoring ALS Education Program.

By submitting an application you are certifying that all the information you entered is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge, and that you will uphold the Constitution, By-Laws and Standards Operating Procedures of this organization. You understand that the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit membership committee may verify information on the application. You also authorize and are aware that background checks will be performed. |
